AI Design Maturity Assessment
Based on John Maeda's E-P-I-A-S × SAE AI Upskilling Framework. Understand where you stand and where to grow.
E-P-I-A-S stages
- Explorer — experimenting, ad-hoc use
- Practitioner — regular use, basic workflows
- Integrator — embedded in workflows, repeatable
- Architect — designing systems, governance
- Steward — strategy, ethics, org-wide maturity
SAE automation levels
From Level 0 (no automation) to Level 5 (full automation in scope). The assessment maps how much AI is assisting vs. fully driving outcomes in your context.
About the framework
John Maeda’s framework (Design in Tech Report 2026) combines two axes: E-P-I-A-S (maturity from Explorer to Steward) and SAE levels 0–5 (how much AI drives the work, adapted from automotive automation). You find your SAE level, then your stage within it. Growing deeper at your current level often beats jumping tool levels—depth of judgment beats breadth of tooling.
